DJ Spinna presents The Wonder of Stevie – The Album Vol. 3

Wonder Of Stevie Vol. 3

We’re extremely excited about this forthcoming “The Wonder of Stevie” release dropping next month courtesy of DJ Spinna and BBE Records. We have been grooving to the sublime first installment of “The Wonder of Stevie” mixed and compiled by DJ Spinna and Bobbito for a few years now (listen below).  “The Wonder of Stevie” is a compilation Chock- Full – Of Stevie Wonder compositions, covers & sweet cookies! This is a welcomed surprise because we had no idea that another installment was even on tap. We’re excited and we hope the news of this upcoming release excites you as well! These well researched and compiled “The Wonder of Stevie” installments are priceless and can easily be considered Stevie Wonder collection essentials.

From BBE Records:

The list of musical highlights for Vincent Williams aka DJ Spinna are too numerous to list, from his seminal hip hop duo Jigmastas and DJ sets across the globe, to his iconic solo productions and remixes. But if you ask him, it’s the relationship he’s forged with personal hero Stevie Wonder that Spinna considers to be his single greatest achievement.
As with most artists of a soulful persuasion, Stevie’s music influenced Spinna from the outset, dictating everything from his approach to writing to his use of Fender Rhodes and Moog bass-lines on his productions. Having gained so much from the great man, Spinna decided to pay tribute in the form of ‘Wonderfull’, a series of parties celebrating the Wonder of Stevie. This is where the story became somewhat surreal for Spinna, suddenly finding himself joined onstage in Washington D.C. by none other than Stevie himself, a spine-tingling moment even when viewed on YouTube.
An extension of the Wonderfull parties, this album represents a celebration of the life, music and cultural impact of Stevie Wonder. Few compilers can boast Spinna’s understanding of Stevie’s back catalogue, not to mention the large number of songs he’s written for other artists over the years. Featuring stunning cover versions you may well have never heard before alongside songs many of us had no idea he’d written, Spinna’s vast knowledge of and boundless enthusiasm for Stevie’s music shines with every selection. As both a super-fan and a close friend, surely there is nobody better placed to compile this wonderful document of Stevie Wonder’s music, inspiration and influence.

LET’S GET IT ON! Vote YES for the USPS Marvin Gaye Commemorative Stamp

Image

It’s been 30 years since the untimely death (April 1, 1984) of Marvin Gaye, one of music’s most prolific and influential singer/songwriter/musicians of the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s.  Marvin Gaye’s contribution to soul music in general and Motown in particular went beyond just individual songs.  By the 70’s his albums in their entirety were concept albums addressing social issues, sexual politics and personal relationship agony, that often times went against the Motown formula of carefully avoiding controversial issues. Marvin Gaye was a passionate visionary and an innovative singer/songwriter/musician.  His albums went on to become landmark recordings that offer love, insight and reassurance to every generation past, present and future.

Undeniable – The Story of The Independent Soul Music Movement

undeniable

We’re excited to finally see a project in the making that tells the story of independent soul music, the movement and the artists that have worked tirelessly recording, touring and promoting their music to the masses from state to state, city to city and for a fortunate few country to country. These artists have weathered the storm with no radio exposure, very limited financial resources, grassroots distribution and word of mouth via social networks as far back as Black Planet and Myspace.   As we well know there are different levels and layers when defining “independent” artist but there is something very authentic and genuine about the independent soul music artist and the movement that has sustained them for nearly two decades.

Undeniable – The Story of The Independent Soul Music Movement is a documentary film directed by John C. Jointer and scored by +FE Music recording artist/producer and multi-instrumentalist Zo!  In order to see this amazing project through to completion we must  support this film financially and spread the word worldwide.  Please visit the film’s Indiegogo page for contribution details.  Check out the trailer and visit the film’s social media sites below.

ABOUT: Undeniable – The Story of The Independent Soul Music Movement

Coined everything from “Indie Soul” to the “Honest Music Movement,” “Undeniable – The Story Of The Independent Soul Music Movement” traces the heretofore untold stories of artists and music lovers right from its late 1990s origins through the halcyon days of the mid-2000s to the lawless rule of today where throughout the collective goal is still to develop, maintain, and grow a space in the global cultural landscape for this multi-tentacle brand of “honest music.” In candid, digitally shot, in-person interviews with those who were there and those pressing the movement forward against impossible odds, “Undeniable” introduces a range of talented “newcomers” to the mainstream film-going audience. Director John C. Jointer uncovers former A-list veterans who found a second life through these new technologically driven models after being told they were too old or not the new major label prototype for the successful international pop star. “Undeniable” plans to juxtapose the plight of fresh young musicians who’ve never had a major label deal as well as those who were signed, shelved, but never saw an album release with those veterans now being represented by large independent labels like eOne, Malaco, Shanachie, and Stax/Concord, or at small indies like Dome, Stones Throw, Giant Steps, and Purpose Music Group. Their range in entering these new music identities complicating who gets to authentically call themselves an “indie artist” in a game where credibility is as elusive as it is key.

Sounds Like London: 100 Years Of Black Music In The Capital by Lloyd Bradley

Image

For as long as people have been migrating to London, so has their music. An essential link to home, music also has the power to shape communities in surprising ways.  Black music has been part of London’s landscape since the First World War, when the Southern Syncopated Orchestra brought jazz to the capital. Following the wave of Commonwealth immigration, its sounds and styles took up residence to become the foundation of the city’s youth culture.  Sounds Like London tells the story of the music and the larger-than-life characters making it, journeying from Soho jazz clubs to Brixton blues parties to King’s Cross warehouse raves to the streets of Notting Hill – and onto sound systems everywhere.  As well as a journey through the musical history of London, Sounds Like London is about the shaping of a city, and in turn the whole nation, though music.

Contributors include Eddy Grant, Osibisa, Russell Henderson, Dizzee Rascal and Trevor Nelson, with an introduction by Soul2Soul’s Jazzie B.

“Sounds Like London is story that needed to be told by somebody who really cares about it, and the most important thing about this book is Lloyd Bradley. The reason this story of London’s black music hasn’t been told before is because we haven’t had a Lloyd Bradley before, and up until now he wasn’t ready to write it.” – Jazzie B

Stax Records: Songs From Scandal: Music For Gladiators – The Soundtrack

Image

Who hasn’t fallen in love with the ABC hit television drama Scandal starring the lovely Kerry Washington as the Washington, D.C. crisis manager Olivia Pope?  I think we have all been on the edge of our seats, biting our nails, screaming at our TV sets, tweeting our emotionally charged opinions, feelings and couch analysis every Thursday night for the past two seasons. We also paid special attention to the hand picked selection of soul music dropped smack dab in the middle of every episode. I would always challenge myself by trying to guess what songs the producers would use every week. I often thought and still think that Quincy Jones’ “Stuff Like That” will one day make the cut. Still holding out hope!

Well, while we eagerly await the premiere of the third season of Scandal on October 3rd, we can move and groove to the music featured in seasons 1 and 2. The good folks at Stax Records have partnered with ABC studios to release Songs from Scandal: Music for Gladiators on September 3rd. The 12-track CD features some of black music’s most treasured soul classics from the 1970s. Show creator Shonda Rhimes contributed to the album’s extensive liner notes, stating:

“During those four days [of writing the ‘Scandal’ pilot], the soundtrack of my writing was the funky, delicious music of the 1970s […] It’s the music that came after they killed Jack and Bobby and Martin and Malcolm […] t’s the music after Nixon disappointed a nation, it’s the music of the sexual revolution and the feminist movement.”

Songs from Scandal: Music for Gladiators track list:

1. War – Edwin Starr
2. Green Onions – Booker T. & The MG’s
3. Everyday People – Sly & The Family Stone
4. I Can See Clearly Now – Johnny Nash
5. Tell Me Something Good – Rufus and Chaka Khan
6. Get Down Tonight – KC and The Sunshine Band
7. I Believe in You (You Believe in Me) – Johnnie Taylor
