The Robert Glasper Experiment Unleashes New Single “Day To Day”

The Robert Glasper Experiment just unleashed their 2nd single from their highly anticipated new album ArtScience due out September 16. As if it’s possible to get even more excited about this album, “Day To Day” sends me right over the edge. With Casey Benjamin on lead vox “Day To Day” is reminiscent of the funk/soul/jazz driven albums of Herbie Hancock in the 70s. Think Herbie Hancock Sunlight and Monster. And as per usual, Mr. Glasper owns the keys and caresses them with his signature loving touch. Check out the single below and grab the album September 16. DJ Spinna presents The Wonder of Stevie – The Album Vol. 3

Wonder Of Stevie Vol. 3

We’re extremely excited about this forthcoming “The Wonder of Stevie” release dropping next month courtesy of DJ Spinna and BBE Records. We have been grooving to the sublime first installment of “The Wonder of Stevie” mixed and compiled by DJ Spinna and Bobbito for a few years now (listen below).  “The Wonder of Stevie” is a compilation Chock- Full – Of Stevie Wonder compositions, covers & sweet cookies! This is a welcomed surprise because we had no idea that another installment was even on tap. We’re excited and we hope the news of this upcoming release excites you as well! These well researched and compiled “The Wonder of Stevie” installments are priceless and can easily be considered Stevie Wonder collection essentials.

From BBE Records:

The list of musical highlights for Vincent Williams aka DJ Spinna are too numerous to list, from his seminal hip hop duo Jigmastas and DJ sets across the globe, to his iconic solo productions and remixes. But if you ask him, it’s the relationship he’s forged with personal hero Stevie Wonder that Spinna considers to be his single greatest achievement.
As with most artists of a soulful persuasion, Stevie’s music influenced Spinna from the outset, dictating everything from his approach to writing to his use of Fender Rhodes and Moog bass-lines on his productions. Having gained so much from the great man, Spinna decided to pay tribute in the form of ‘Wonderfull’, a series of parties celebrating the Wonder of Stevie. This is where the story became somewhat surreal for Spinna, suddenly finding himself joined onstage in Washington D.C. by none other than Stevie himself, a spine-tingling moment even when viewed on YouTube.
An extension of the Wonderfull parties, this album represents a celebration of the life, music and cultural impact of Stevie Wonder. Few compilers can boast Spinna’s understanding of Stevie’s back catalogue, not to mention the large number of songs he’s written for other artists over the years. Featuring stunning cover versions you may well have never heard before alongside songs many of us had no idea he’d written, Spinna’s vast knowledge of and boundless enthusiasm for Stevie’s music shines with every selection. As both a super-fan and a close friend, surely there is nobody better placed to compile this wonderful document of Stevie Wonder’s music, inspiration and influence.

Liner Notes:

‘Love Byrd’ celebrates the work and legacy of trumpeter Donald Byrd. From hard-bop to jazz/soul/funk, Donald Byrd took jazz and jazz listeners to another space in the 70s and early 80s. In 1981 Donald Byrd along with his 125th Street, N.Y.C. band released the soulful, jazz-tinged “Love Byrd” LP produced by the legendary Isaac Hayes. By the late 90s “Love Byrd” became a highly sought after rare groove classic LP by DJs and rare groovers worldwide. By the 80s Donald Byrd had already transitioned from his hard-bop jazz roots to a more soul/funk groove. That transition and groove can be credited to his collaborations with the Mizell Brothers (Blue Note Records) in the 70s.

LET’S GET IT ON! Vote YES for the USPS Marvin Gaye Commemorative Stamp

It’s been 30 years since the untimely death (April 1, 1984) of Marvin Gaye, one of music’s most prolific and influential singer/songwriter/musicians of the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s.  Marvin Gaye’s contribution to soul music in general and Motown in particular went beyond just individual songs.  By the 70’s his albums in their entirety were concept albums addressing social issues, sexual politics and personal relationship agony, that often times went against the Motown formula of carefully avoiding controversial issues. Marvin Gaye was a passionate visionary and an innovative singer/songwriter/musician.  His albums went on to become landmark recordings that offer love, insight and reassurance to every generation past, present and future.

On April 14, 2014 Carla Johnson, Zeola Gaye and Janis Gaye created the Vote For The Marvin Gaye USPS Stamp Campaign Via Facebook to get a million signatures to give Marvin the honor that he rightfully deserves, by presenting the Marvin Gaye USPS Commemorative Postage Stamp.  Please SIGN THE PETITION and help spread the word around the world, so that EVERYONE has the opportunity to SIGN THE PETITION and make this dream a reality! NOW is the time… so LET’S GET IT ON! It’s OVER DUE!

The Revelations – The Cost Of Living

The Revelations - The Cost Of Living

As  The Revelations prepare to release their latest offering, The Cost Of Living (Decision/Sony RED) on April 29, lead singer Rell Gaddis sits down to discuss the band’s classic soul influences.  Since they first came on the scene in 2008 with their Deep Soul EP (Decision), Brooklyn, NY’s The Revelations have represented the raw essence of classic soul, funk and blues with a sharp modern edge—one which shows reverence for the masters, but with a uniquely modern sensibility.

On The Cost Of Living, Rell Gaddis assumes the lead vocal duties previously provided by Tre Williams. This is by no means Rell’s debut with The Revelations, however. Rell has been part of the group’s writing team from their onset, and performed with the band for years, even contributing lead vocals to “It’s Too Late” from their 2009 album The Bleeding Edge (Decision).   Since being signed to Jay-Z’s Roc-a-fella Records back in 1997, Rell has had a prolific singing and writing career, creating his own records, as well as penning and lending vocals to songs featuring artists Usher (Rell wrote Usher’s #1 RnB Hit “Here I Stand”), Jay-Z, Kanye West, Mary J Blige, and many more.

This workman-like mentality is pervasive throughout the band as well. The Revelations feature Wes Mingus on guitar, Gintas Janusonis on drums, and newcomer Ben Zwerin on bass. Each accomplished performing and session musicians in their own right, The Revelations have combined to provide music for icons such as the Wu-Tang Clan and Lee “Scratch” Perry, as well as soul royalty Otis Clay, Willie Clayton, Benny Latimore, and Swamp Dogg.

Check out who Rell says influenced the band and the creation of The Cost Of Living album.

Stax Records: Songs From Scandal: Music For Gladiators – The Soundtrack

Who hasn’t fallen in love with the ABC hit television drama Scandal starring the lovely Kerry Washington as the Washington, D.C. crisis manager Olivia Pope?  I think we have all been on the edge of our seats, biting our nails, screaming at our TV sets, tweeting our emotionally charged opinions, feelings and couch analysis every Thursday night for the past two seasons. We also paid special attention to the hand picked selection of soul music dropped smack dab in the middle of every episode. I would always challenge myself by trying to guess what songs the producers would use every week. I often thought and still think that Quincy Jones’ “Stuff Like That” will one day make the cut. Still holding out hope!

Well, while we eagerly await the premiere of the third season of Scandal on October 3rd, we can move and groove to the music featured in seasons 1 and 2. The good folks at Stax Records have partnered with ABC studios to release Songs from Scandal: Music for Gladiators on September 3rd. The 12-track CD features some of black music’s most treasured soul classics from the 1970s. Show creator Shonda Rhimes contributed to the album’s extensive liner notes, stating:

“During those four days [of writing the ‘Scandal’ pilot], the soundtrack of my writing was the funky, delicious music of the 1970s […] It’s the music that came after they killed Jack and Bobby and Martin and Malcolm […] t’s the music after Nixon disappointed a nation, it’s the music of the sexual revolution and the feminist movement.”

Songs from Scandal: Music for Gladiators track list:

1. War – Edwin Starr
2. Green Onions – Booker T. & The MG’s
3. Everyday People – Sly & The Family Stone
4. I Can See Clearly Now – Johnny Nash
5. Tell Me Something Good – Rufus and Chaka Khan
6. Get Down Tonight – KC and The Sunshine Band

Stax Museum: Isaac Hayes’ 1972 Cadillac El Dorado

The Stax Museum of American Soul Music, located at the original site of Stax Records, 926 E McLemore Ave in Memphis, Tennessee, pays tribute to all of the artists who recorded there with a rare and amazing collection of more than 2,000 interactive exhibits, films, artifacts, items of memorabilia and galleries designed to keep Stax alive forever.

Recently Tim Sampson, the communications director for the Soulsville Foundation, the foundation responsible for preserving the history of Stax Records in the museum, selected his top five music artifacts and gave a story behind them. One of his selected artifacts was Isaac Hayes’ 1972 Cadillac El Dorado. Below is what Tim Sampson had to say about one of the most popular exhibits in the museum.

“Cadillac gave Isaac Hayes this car in 1972 as a reward for his Hot Buttered Soul album and as a PR stunt to go with the release of the Black Moses album. It’s trimmed with gold and lined with white fur and even has a refrigerator and a TV in it. I don’t know how long he had it for, but I know he drove it around town. It’s one of our most popular exhibits. I’ve never driven it, but I’ve sat in it.”
